Privacy
SkyLumi is a night-sky map by Kiruna Labs. This section describes what the app and website can access, and where that data goes.
No accounts
We do not create user accounts, and we do not ask for your name, email, or phone number to use the sky map.
Location
If you allow it, SkyLumi uses your location to draw the sky from where you are and, on a phone, to aim the view with true north. It is not required — you can set a place yourself, or leave the default.
Device sensors
If you turn on the AR sky view, the camera draws the sky over what it sees; motion and compass sensors aim the view as you move the phone. Both are optional, and camera frames are not uploaded.
Voice guide (Lumi)
Where Lumi is available you can choose to talk with the optional voice guide. That uses the microphone and sends what you say to a third-party AI provider (currently Google) so Lumi can reply. The microphone is off until you choose to speak, and it is not used where Lumi is not offered. We may keep limited diagnostic records of those sessions to operate and improve the guide.
Usage and product data
We collect usage, diagnostic, and product data so we can operate SkyLumi, keep it reliable, and improve the product. This may include how the map and features are used, performance and crash information, app version and device type, an anonymous identifier used to group your own activity on one device together, approximate region, in-app search queries, and limited session diagnostics. We do not sell this information, and we do not use it to show you third-party advertising.
We use service providers to process this data on our behalf, including Sentry (crash and error reports) and PostHog (product analytics). See Sentry's privacy policy and PostHog's privacy policy.
Feedback
If you send us feedback through the app's feedback form, what you write is sent to UserDispatch, our feedback vendor, along with basic technical context (the page you were on, browser and device type) needed to act on it. Giving your email address, so we can reply, or attaching a file, such as a screenshot, is optional — the form does not require either. See UserDispatch's privacy policy.
Sky imagery
The map streams survey imagery (including DSS2, Pan-STARRS, and SkyMapper) from public astronomy archives. Credits for those sources are below and in the app.
Terms of use
By using SkyLumi — the website, the sky map, or the mobile apps — you agree to these terms. They are short on purpose.
What it costs
SkyLumi is free to use today. We may introduce paid features in future, and if we do we will say so before it affects you.
What it is for
SkyLumi is for learning about and enjoying the night sky. It is accurate enough to point you at things, but it is not a navigation, surveying, aviation, or maritime instrument and must not be relied on as one. Do not use it while driving.
Looking after yourself
Stargazing happens outdoors, in the dark, often somewhere unfamiliar. Where you go and whether it is safe is your call, not ours. Never look at the Sun through binoculars or a telescope.
What we own, and what we don't
The SkyLumi name, the application, its design and its source code belong to Kiruna Labs. All rights are reserved; nothing here grants you a licence to copy, redistribute or build on the app itself.
The astronomical imagery and catalogue data are a different matter — they were made by observatories, surveys and volunteers, and they carry their own licences. Those are listed under credits. If you want to reuse an image you saw in SkyLumi, take it from the original source under its own terms, not from us.
No warranty
SkyLumi is provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind. We do not promise it will be available, uninterrupted, or free of errors, and we are not liable for any loss arising from using it — to the fullest extent the law where you live allows.
Changes
We may update SkyLumi and these terms as the product develops. The date above says when the terms last changed; continuing to use SkyLumi after a change means you accept the new version.
Image & data credits
SkyLumi composites publicly-licensed sky imagery and catalogue data from several sources. Several of them are licensed on the condition that this attribution stays visible to everyone using the app, so it appears in the app's own Credits panel as well as here.
Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) survey imagery

CDS Aladin HiPS sky tiles
CDS Aladin Sky Atlas, Unistra/CNRS. In Photographic mode, sky imagery (Pan-STARRS DR1, SkyMapper DR4, DSS2/DSSColor, and the Hα/infrared/X-ray wavelength bands) streams from the Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS) Aladin HiPS service. A sparse overlay of Rubin Observatory First Look tiles is streamed from the same service only while that story is open.

Deep-sky object images are sourced from the ESO image archive, the NASA/ESA Hubble (ESA/Hubble) distribution, NASA/ESA/CSA JWST, and NOIRLab — all Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). Individual per-image photo credits are shown when you select an object.
Deep-sky tile enhancements
Twenty-seven deep-sky objects — the Lagoon (M8), Dumbbell (M27), Helix, Crab (M1), Trifid (M20), Eagle (M16), Rosette (NGC 2237), Orion (M42), Whirlpool (M51), Sunflower (M63), Black Eye (M64), M106, Silver Sliver (NGC 891), Sculptor (NGC 253), Cigar (M82), Needle (NGC 4565), Sombrero (M104), Triangulum (M33), Bode's (M81), Centaurus A (NGC 5128), Southern Pinwheel (M83), Omega (M17), Fireworks (NGC 6946), Bubble (NGC 7635), M78, M100, and M110 — show an AI-composited core over the DSS2 survey base tile in Photographic survey mode ("Deep sky overlays" switch); everything outside each object's core is untouched. The reference photograph guiding each enhancement is credited individually (public/CREDITS.md has the full per-object list): twenty are Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) ESO/NOIRLab sources, five (Dumbbell, Rosette, Needle, Orion, Bode's) are Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA) Wikimedia Commons photographs, one (Sunflower) is CC0 1.0, and Sombrero's reference is a Hubble Heritage/STScI image under a non-CC copyright notice requiring credit.
Story photos
The photographs shown with each story come from the ESO image archive, the NASA/ESA Hubble (ESA/Hubble) and NASA/ESA/CSA Webb (ESA/Webb) distributions, NOIRLab — all Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) — the NASA image archives, and Wikimedia Commons. The Starman/Roadster photograph is a SpaceX image donated to the public domain under CC0 1.0. Each story card carries its own photo credit.
Where a picture is an artist's impression rather than a photograph, the card says so: no telescope has ever resolved an exoplanet's surface, and several of these worlds are known only from the light they block. Where a picture illustrates a story rather than portraying its subject, the card says that too.
Deep-sky catalog — bulk NGC/IC tier
OpenNGC, by Mattia Verga and contributors. Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0). ShareAlike applies to the derived catalog binary, not the app code. Used to build a bulk deep-sky tier of galaxies, clusters and nebulae beyond the curated catalog below.

Chandra "Galactic Gems" companion imagery
Five objects — M82, M104 (Sombrero), M106, M33 (Triangulum), and Centaurus A (NGC 5128) — show a second, explicitly captioned image on their Object Info card: a NASA/CXC "Galactic Gems" press composite (2026-08-25) combining Chandra X-ray data with optical (and, for some objects, infrared or ultraviolet) imagery from other observatories. These are false-colour, multi-wavelength composites, never a photograph of what the object looks like to the eye, and are always secondary to the card's real optical image.

Rubin Observatory First Look
The "Rubin's first look" story overlays a sparse HiPS of the NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory First Look images, streamed from the CDS Aladin HiPS service (P/Rubin/FirstLook). Coverage is 29 square degrees — the Virgo Cluster mosaic and the Trifid and Lagoon mosaic — not a full-sky survey. HiPS packaging: Open Database License (ODbL-1.0).
