When to look
NASA lists Eta Aquariid activity from April 19 to May 28, 2027. The peak falls on the night of May 5 into May 6. The IMO calendar behind SkyLumi’s meteor pages gives a peak date of May 6 and no clock time.
We tried to reach imo.net again on 8 September 2026. It is still offline after a reported cyber attack, as is the American Meteor Society’s site. Both sources agree on the date, so no exact instant is claimed here.
Treat the pre-dawn hours of May 6 as your window, and the morning of May 5 as a decent backup. This shower has a broad maximum rather than a sharp one.
A genuinely dark sky
New Moon falls at 10:58 UTC on May 6, 2027, per the US Naval Observatory. The Moon is 1% lit on the morning of May 5 and effectively absent on May 6.
That removes the usual limiting factor. What is left is weather, light pollution and how high the radiant climbs where you live.
Why the southern hemisphere wins
The radiant lies in Aquarius, at right ascension 22h 32m and declination −1 degree. It rises only a few hours before the Sun does.
NASA puts the northern hemisphere rate at about 10 meteors per hour. Farther south it gives about 50 per hour near the peak. Aquarius simply climbs higher in a southern sky.
Northern observers get a consolation. NASA describes Eta Aquariid earthgrazers, long meteors that skim along near the horizon when the radiant is barely up.
How many to expect
NASA lists about 10 meteors per hour under dark skies, rising to about 50 per hour at the peak. The IMO catalog gives an idealized benchmark of 50.
Those figures assume a dark site and a radiant well above the horizon. From a suburban garden in the northern hemisphere, a handful over an hour is a realistic result.
Eta Aquariids are fast, at 65 km per second by NASA’s figure. Fast meteors often leave a glowing trail that hangs for a second or two.
The same comet, twice a year
The dust comes from comet 1P/Halley. Earth crosses Halley’s orbital debris twice each year, and the other crossing produces the Orionids in October.
Halley itself last passed through the inner solar system in 1986. NASA gives its next return as 2061. The dust it left behind arrives on schedule regardless.

A comfortable way to watch
Set an alarm for two hours before sunrise and look toward the east. Do not stare at the radiant itself. Meteors farther from it leave longer trails.
Give your eyes fifteen minutes away from screens before you start counting. A reclining chair and a blanket matter more than any equipment.

If you miss it
The Eta Aquariids run for weeks either side of the peak, at lower rates. A clear morning in early May is worth an hour even away from the maximum.
