Use the Moon or a planet first
Start with the Moon or a bright planet if either is available. Use the other branch when neither is available.
For two minutes, choose one target. With the Moon, compare its phase, bright highlands, and dark maria.
Try a phase other than full. With a planet, use the planet checker for its height and direction.
The checker calculates geometry. Clouds and local horizons can still hide the planet.
Choose a planet well above the horizon. Low objects shimmer more through thick air.
For the next four minutes, find a second target if one is available. Otherwise, identify one bright anchor pattern.
Use the next two minutes to compare the target or pattern with a map. Set the map to your place and time.

Use the final two minutes for notes. Record the date, time, target or pattern, and direction.
Use a bright pattern when neither appears
Spend two minutes away from bright lights. This is an initial adjustment, not full dark adaptation.
Full low-light sensitivity can take 30 minutes or more. Keep phone screens and flashlights dim.
For the next three minutes, choose one bright anchor pattern from a map. Set the map to your place and time.
Match its shape with the sky. Use the map to check the pattern’s name.
Spend three minutes estimating its direction and height. Use the horizon and a nearby roofline as references.
Use the final two minutes for notes. Record the date, time, pattern, and direction.
City skies still show bright stars and patterns. Light pollution hides many faint stars and the Milky Way.
Do not judge a night by one target. A cloud gap, a different direction, or a later hour can change the view.
Add binoculars only after finding the target
Find the target with your eyes before using binoculars. A steady 7x35 or 10x50 pair can show lunar terrain.
Binoculars or a small telescope show stronger relief near the lunar terminator. Rest your elbows on a wall or railing.
Never point binoculars or a telescope near the Sun. Do not sweep near sunset with optical equipment.
A notebook is more useful than a complicated setup on your first night. Write what you noticed before looking up a name.
Repeat the same plan on another clear night. Familiarity makes the second session easier, even if the target has changed.
