Why this one is subtle

Earth’s shadow has a dark inner region, the umbra, and a much lighter outer region, the penumbra. A total or partial lunar eclipse puts part of the Moon in the umbra. That produces an obvious dark bite, or a full coppery red disk. This eclipse never reaches the umbra at all.

In a penumbral eclipse, the full Moon passes only through the outer penumbra. The result is a soft dimming across part of the disk. Afterward, observers often describe it as “that side looked a little duller,” rather than anything dramatic in the moment.

“Blood moon” describes a total lunar eclipse. Nothing about that name applies here. Do not expect red.

When it happens

NASA’s eclipse catalog places greatest eclipse at 23:13 UTC on February 20, 2027. That instant falls in the early evening across the Americas. Across Europe, Africa and much of Asia, it lands in the middle of the night.

No safety equipment is needed to watch a lunar eclipse. You are looking at the Moon, not the Sun. That is unrelated to the solar-eclipse safety rules on the other pages here. Keep the two clearly separate when sharing plans with anyone else.

Widely visible, if the Moon is up

Unlike a solar eclipse’s narrow path, a lunar eclipse is visible from the entire night side of Earth. It just needs the Moon above the horizon at the right time. Whether that includes your location depends on local moonrise and moonset, not a path map.

Check the Moon’s position for your city and the evening of February 20, 2027, before making plans. If the Moon rises after greatest eclipse in your time zone, you will miss the deepest part of the shading. It was already subtle.

What to actually expect

At best, a careful, dark-adapted observer may notice a faint gray shading. It sits across one edge of the Moon’s disk, near greatest eclipse. Many people looking at the same Moon will see nothing obviously different from an ordinary full Moon.

A photograph with adjusted contrast can exaggerate the effect well beyond what the naked eye sees. Do not judge this event by an edited image found later online.

Binoculars can make the subtle shading a little easier to notice, by increasing contrast slightly. They will not turn this into a dramatic eclipse. This is a night for low expectations and a genuinely full Moon either way.

The next chance
