Protect your eyes first

For direct viewing of the Sun, use an intact, properly made solar viewer that complies with ISO 12312-2. Follow its instructions. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe solar filters. Inspect viewers for damage and supervise children. The American Astronomical Society’s safety guide explains the method and links to reputable suppliers.

Never look through an unfiltered telescope, binoculars or camera viewfinder while wearing eclipse glasses. Concentrated sunlight can damage the viewer and injure your eyes. Optical equipment requires a suitable solar filter secured over the Sun-facing aperture; seek expert guidance before using it.

The only direct-view exception is the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse. It applies only when the bright solar surface is completely covered and you are inside the path of totality. Protection is required again before any bright surface reappears. There is no such exception during a partial eclipse. When it happens

NASA’s eclipse catalog places greatest eclipse at 10:07 UTC on August 2, 2027. That instant falls in the late morning across Spain and North Africa, and around midday farther east. Convert it to your own clock before making plans. Check local contact times on a detailed path map rather than using this single instant for a whole country.

The Moon is new that day, as it must be for any solar eclipse. There is nothing to check about its evening appearance either side of the event.

This eclipse is notable for how long totality lasts along parts of the center line. It is among the longer totalities of the decade. The Moon is relatively close to Earth at that alignment, and the Sun relatively far.

Where totality falls

NASA describes the path of totality crossing southern Spain and North Africa, including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. It continues into Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Partial phases are visible across most of Europe, much of Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Eastern Canada, northern Maine and surrounding ocean regions see one too.

Totality itself is a narrow band, typically no more than a couple of hundred kilometres wide. A city near the path, even a well-known one, may sit just outside it. It may then see only a deep partial eclipse. Check a detailed path map for your exact coordinates well before travelling.

Weather is the harder variable for this stretch of the path. August skies over the Mediterranean and North Africa are often clear. That is a seasonal tendency, not a forecast for this specific date. Check regional weather closer to the time.

What totality actually looks like

In the partial phases before and after totality, the Sun narrows to a crescent through a safe solar viewer. As totality begins, daylight dims quickly. Temperatures can drop noticeably, and the horizon can take on a sunset-like glow in every direction.

During totality itself, and only during totality, it is safe to look directly at the eclipsed Sun without a filter. The Moon’s dark disk blocks the bright solar surface. The much fainter corona, the Sun’s outer atmosphere, becomes visible as pale streamers reaching outward. Bright planets and stars can appear in the darkened sky.

Outside the path of totality, the same event is an ordinary partial eclipse instead. It is a bite out of the Sun’s disk that never fully closes. The safety rules for a partial eclipse apply there for the whole event, with no exception.

Why planning starts nearly a year out

The path crosses popular, well-connected destinations, and accommodation along a narrow eclipse path fills quickly once dates are confirmed. Checking travel options and path maps well before the date is reasonable for this one. A shower, by contrast, you can decide on the same evening.
