When to look

The IMO calendar behind SkyLumi’s meteor pages puts the 2027 maximum between 08:00 and 10:00 UTC on August 13. It gives activity from July 17 to August 24.

NASA’s Perseids page has not been updated for 2027. On 8 September 2026 it still carried the 2026 edition. That edition runs through August 24, 2026, peaking August 12 into 13. We are not treating that as a 2027 source.

We tried to reach imo.net again on 8 September 2026. It is still offline after a reported cyber attack, as is the American Meteor Society’s site. The peak window above comes from the calendar edition reviewed before the outage.

Whether the peak reaches your sky

The peak window falls at 04:00 to 06:00 in eastern North America, which is dark there. Across central Europe it is 10:00 to 12:00 local time, in broad daylight.

European observers should watch the pre-dawn hours of August 13 instead, ahead of the peak. The shower is strong enough that a few hours off maximum still delivers.

Convert the window to your own clock before deciding which night to take. The nights either side of the peak are worth using if the forecast is bad.

The Moon sets in time

The Moon is a waxing gibbous on August 13, 2027, about 88% lit, per the US Naval Observatory. Full Moon is not until August 17.

At 40 degrees north the Moon sets at about 02:24 local time and dawn begins near 05:40. That leaves roughly three hours of properly dark sky, and the peak sits inside them.

Wait for moonset rather than starting at midnight. The difference in what you see is larger than most people expect.

How many to expect

The IMO catalog lists an idealized benchmark of 110 or more meteors per hour for 2027. NASA describes 50 to 100 per hour under good conditions.

Both assume a dark sky and a high radiant during the peak. From a suburban garden, 15 to 25 an hour is a more realistic figure.

The Perseids are known for fireballs, meteors brighter than magnitude −3. They come from larger grains, and they can leave a trail that lingers for seconds.

Where the radiant is

The radiant sits in Perseus, at right ascension 3h 12m and declination +58 degrees. That far north it never sets from most of Europe and North America.

The radiant climbs through the night, so rates build toward dawn. From the southern hemisphere Perseus barely clears the horizon, and the shower is a poor one there.

Do not stare at Perseus. Watch a wide patch of sky away from it, where meteors leave longer trails.

A comfortable way to watch

August nights are warm in the northern hemisphere, which is part of why this shower is the most watched. Bring a reclining chair and something to lie on anyway.

Give your eyes fifteen minutes away from screens before judging the sky. Streetlights and car headlights undo that in a second.

If you miss it

The Perseids stay active for a week either side of the peak at lower rates. A clear night on August 11 or August 15 is still worth an hour.
